ARCHIVE [return to current works]
Born 1941
Paul Philp studied ceramics at Cardiff College of Art and has been making pottery for forty years.
Inspired by nature, geology and ancient culture, Philp has spent much of his time learning traditional ways of hand building.
Each work is slowly built by hand allowing it to form naturally and organically and as he often mixes his clays, due to different shrinking ratios, crags and fissures are created. Many of his works are fired up to 5 times at a temperature of about 1260 centigrade, and where in between the firing process he will carve, refine and add colour to his pieces. Slips and a very basic dry ash glaze may be applied in varied ways of dipping.
